ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 47, CA —
Today, Safer California announced its endorsement of Christy Holstege for Assembly District 47, highlighting her commitment to tackling gun violence and her track record of effective leadership on public safety issues. Founded in 2022, Safer California targets down-ballot races to challenge right-wing extremism and promote candidates who are not afraid to take on the gun lobby and fight for safer communities. Safer California joins the Palm Springs Police Officers Association in endorsing Christy – underscoring her position as the strongest public safety candidate in the race.
"I am proud to be the only candidate in this race endorsed by Safer California,"
said Christy Holstege. "In the State Assembly, I will fight tirelessly for stricter gun laws, including banning high-capacity magazines and expanding background checks to keep our communities safe. Our fight against gun violence is about saving lives, and I'm ready to lead that fight."
In her tenure on the City Council, Christy Holstege has already taken decisive steps toward enhancing public safety and gun control. She has been a vocal advocate for tightening gun laws, supporting bans on high-capacity magazines, expanding background checks, and enacting firearms prohibitions for those deemed unsafe by courts. Beyond gun legislation, Christy has championed comprehensive reforms in law enforcement to hold rogue officers accountable for misconduct. Recognizing the importance of holistic safety measures, she has spearheaded initiatives to integrate mental health experts, social workers, and addiction specialists into community responses, particularly for 911 calls related to homelessness and mental health crises. These actions are part of her broader commitment to building safer communities through thoughtful, effective policy, and strong working relationships with local law enforcement.
Christy's campaign and initiatives stand in direct opposition to the California GOP, which has repeatedly obstructed smart gun safety legislation. While her opponent remains tethered to outdated policies that compromise public safety, Christy has championed proactive solutions that address the root causes of gun violence and worked alongside law enforcement to create real community safety.
The closely watched seat remains a top pickup priority for California Assembly Democrats after Holstege lost to her GOP opponent by just 85 votes in 2022, in one of the closest races in California legislative history. Incumbent Republican Assemblymember Greg Wallis currently holds one of the most endangered seats in Sacramento. The district boasts a solid 6.4% Democratic voter registration advantage, a figure that's projected to swell to an imposing 10-12% by the time November 2024 rolls around.
