ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 47, CA — The Christy Holstege campaign is proud to announce Senator María Elena Durazo has officially endorsed Christy Holstege for State Assembly in District 47. Christy’s campaign continues to build momentum, earning widespread support from key leaders and grassroots activists alike. Durazo joins a long list of state leaders backing Christy, including Governor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, along with powerhouse organizations including the California Labor Federation, the California Democratic Party, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest .
“I am honored to have the support of such a dedicated and influential public servant like María Elena Durazo,”
said Christy Holstege.
“Her journey from the fields of California to serving in the State Senate is truly inspiring. “I deeply admire Senator Durazo's relentless fight for workers' rights and her leadership in the labor movement. Her endorsement shows the strong foundation of our campaign and together, we’ll work to create a more just and equitable California.”
María Elena Durazo's journey from a childhood as the seventh of eleven children to migrant worker parents, through the fields of California and Oregon, to her esteemed position as a State Senator is a testament to her resilience and dedication. From organizing for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union to leading as Executive Vice President of UNITE-HERE International, Durazo has been a tireless advocate for workers. Her extensive leadership includes roles as the first woman Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, and key positions in the Democratic National Committee and Barack Obama's Presidential Campaign.
The announcement comes on the heels of endorsements from Governor Gavin Newsom and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas – two of the most influential political voices in California. The closely watched seat remains a top pickup priority for California Assembly Democrats after Holstege lost to her GOP opponent by just 85 votes in 2022, in one of the closest races in California legislative history. Incumbent Republican Assemblymember Greg Wallis currently holds one of the most endangered seats in Sacramento. The district boasts a solid 6.4% Democratic voter registration advantage, a figure that's projected to swell to an imposing 10-12% by the November 2024 General Election.
